The legendary shock jock begins his reign as a judge of "America's Got Talent" this evening, and already, critics are up in arms. The Parents Television Council, the watchdog group that bemoans any suggestion of sex or profanity on TV, sent a letter to 91 companies that have bought commerical time during the NBC competition in the past, advising them to spend their money elsewhere because of Stern's "reputation for sleaze and misogyny.
The PTC said in the letter, "[T]o our knowledge his only previous judging experience consisted of looking at insecure, naked young women and telling them whether or not they were hot enough to pose for Playboy.
But at the time, it was pretty controversial, not to mention gross. Stern descended from the ceiling as Fartman and simulated a gigantic release of gas that triggered an on-stage explosion. MTV was appalled, and Stern hasn't been invited back to the awards since. He initially had visions of turning Fartman into a movie, but those never panned out. The day before her funeral, he played gunshots over Selena's music and mocked Selena's fans with a fake Hispanic accent.
He also said, "Spanish people have the worst taste in music. This music does absolutely nothing for me. Well, maybe. Come to think of it, one hand works the iPad and the other jerks off.
But my point is that I try to hit all the bases. You could still ask your masturbation question, but with class. When your interviews were more hostile, they fit with the image you played up of yourself as a Hollywood outsider. But a lot of times outsiders badly want to be on the inside. Was that the case for you? The way I was when I was younger was somewhat dishonest. It has been an evolution. Has your thinking about women evolved, too?
As you get older, you start to think about family and what their impressions might be. My daughters and my wife are so important, and I really did want to make changes as I got older in terms of what I put out there. Is that true? Is that true, though? Whom have you apologized to? I was brutal , 6 and at some point I realized how much I admired her.
She had gone through so much [expletive], because when I go after someone, my audience goes with me. It has been such a clean break. I choose my words about Artie carefully, because I love him. I got my fingers crossed for the guy. It was many years of wanting Artie to get help. I get sad talking about Artie. He was a tremendous contributor. But we had to move on. Donald Trump used to be a regular guest on the show, but he never got the serious interview treatment.
Is he capable of the introspection that you want from an interview subject? I think I could get something out of Donald that is entertaining, but interesting? When I used to interview Trump, he was fantastic, because here was a real estate developer who wanted to be famous.
He was as unguarded as any human being has ever been on my show. But once Donald Trump became a candidate for real — not like the couple of times he toyed with running — he became one of the worst radio guests. He had to. So now it would be a much different interview. But could I crack him open and get my old Donald back? Donald is a well-guarded personality. Donald has been traumatized, make no mistake. I believe his father was a very difficult guy.
It was a publicity stunt. These are my beliefs based on facts that I know. Facts like what? I know people who orchestrated some of these things. I was at Mar-a-Lago around when it was announced that Donald was going to run for president, and like everyone else, I thought, Ha-ha-ha.
Lo and behold, people did. I believe that traumatized people, and I include myself —. How were you traumatized? The way I grew up.
And I feel that Donald is caught up in getting the love of the masses, which is unobtainable and leads to no good. I believed in Hillary Clinton, because she was a career politician. She was into the job in the way her husband was. Donald, I knew he would spend more time golfing than serving the White House. What can I say? I think Donald was a lot happier not being in the White House. Have you tried to get him on the show since he became president?
Is being caught up in trying to get the love of the masses something you can relate to? Which is quite a paradox for someone whose been as willfully controversial as you have.
How much does being famous help your interviewing? It helps. To some extent people come in wanting to please me. When I wrote the new book, I started to reflect on the art of interviewing. You have to not only do research but also have a sense of what keeps people interested, when to cut them off, when to help them out. When I can look Jon Stewart in the eye and know the first punch line he ever said on stage, 9 that sets up a vibe. That separates you out. There is no greater judge of whether you have talent or not than to go on a commercial radio station and try to attract an audience.
