Most of us spray for at least three to six times as long — many of us for probably longer. A one second spray has about 7 calories, 2 seconds has about 14 calories and and 1. Again, not huge numbers, but 2 seconds is still awfully short. Odds are that a lot of us spray our pans a bit longer. If the length and number of your spritzes are in danger of cranking up the fat and calorie count, either cut back on the spray or consider using a small amount of oil on a paper towel to coat your pan.
How does a product claiming to use real oil have zero calories? We turned to math and our test kitchen to find the answer. In reality, there are about eight calories for every one-second spray. So, how many calories are you really consuming when you spray a pan?
We tested and timed spraying a xinch glass pan, 9-inch square glass pan, and a 9-inch metal cake pan to see how long it really took to coat each one. After a few rounds, we estimated most pans take three to four seconds to adequately spray for non-stick cooking. Probably not. I mean, a tablespoon of butter of oil contains over calories, which can add up really quickly. Even if you spray cooking spray for 8 full seconds which is a very long time that would still only add about 60 calories.
