All new bars manufactured and fitted after then had to comply with stringent EU legislation. They could also make any insurance claim invalid if you were involved in an accident. Unfortunately not. Having said that, companies are allowed to continue selling stock after the law was imposed providing that the stock being sold was purchased before the law was implemented, however as you can imagine RoughTrax stock was snapped up within days of the EU legislation coming into force.
Subsequent orders could not be placed for bars not conforming to the new standards, in fact the largest UK Manufacturer ceased production almost immediately. The end goal was for bull bars gradually being phased out which I guess if we look around nowadays this has happened. All frontal protection systems must meet certain technical requirements where they were fitted to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, the type approval system is very timely and expensive.
Bull bars need to absorb energy and the bar itself cannot, the brackets need to be designed to absorb the energy, in which case the brackets deflect allowing the bar to be pushed into the front of the vehicle so as not to cause excessive injury to pedestrians.

I guess it's the world we live in now and their non-committal language reflects what is no doubt applicable to any individual situation No matter what your bar and vehicle has in stickers, certificates, ratings or inspections, someone can still sue your butt for all its worth if they feel so inclined.
Whether they are successful or not, the inconvenience and costs make us all think twice. You sure you didn't phone Microsoft in error??? Interesting to see what they say. Fairly sure there are regs available online if you want search.

Insured with Admiral and have bullbars specified as additions to the vehicle. No issues. Was also looking into this when i bought the lc as it was already fitted, and no clear info from DVLA. I figure if it passes an MOT it can't be illegal Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.
Joined Jun 12, Messages 2, It can be illegal and stil pass an MOT, also, it's tha matter of if insurance companies will cover it which if you declared it one would assume they will, but get it in writing It became illegal to sell or fit bullbars after a certain date that I can't remember unless they are type approved namely manufacturer approved and don't negativelt change the impact characteristics of the vehicle.
It's less to do with protection of the occupants, more pedestrians. The law however is not retrospective so if it was fitted before that date, your alright but it still eneds to be declared to your insurers winch bars are exempt as someone said because they are a mounting system for the winch, but must have a winch fitted.

Is there any truth to that? I am interested because I want one for my defender in the UK. In the States I saved the front end of my truck a couple of times.
If they are truly illegal, then the world's gone mad. Maybe you aren't aware of why the bull bars went out of favour in this country? If they aren't already then it probably isn't far away. There would be some justification for doing so though.
Think what they would do to a pedestrian. Likewise the "bumper" on Landy's. Don't go off on one Landy owners, you know it's true. I used to "reposition" the stupidly big communal bins in Edinburgh when they encroached on parking spaces with my Series III Landy Last edited: Feb 15,
